Chapter 18

“It’s a shooting! Somebody’s been shot!”

People started screaming and moving back. I lay there, paralyzed, in agony. I’d taken a bullet to the head.

I was dying.

A warm trickle bled into one of my eyes. I put my hand up, my mind scraped blank with terror. Why wasn’t anyone helping me? As if reading my mind, a walkie-talkie crackled, and then someone yelled out that the resort owners were calling 911.

More than anything, I didn’t want to touch the hole in my head, but I couldn’t stop myself. I put my fingers on the spot about an inch above my eyebrows and was repulsed at the hard and wet blob protruding there. Were my brains leaking out? Morbid curiosity won over prudence. I gingerly lifted the blob of bulging flesh, tipping my eyes so I could see it. The pain didn’t get any worse, so I tried to focus on the blob.

I blinked, and then blinked again.

I was holding a squashed June bug.

I had not been shot. In my rush to escape Jason, I’d collided with a flying beetle with such force that I’d juiced it right on my own noggin.

I sat up shakily to tell the crowd the ambulance wouldn’t be needed, that the professional dork who’d almost drowned herself on a fake dead body yesterday had now just knocked herself silly on a June bug the size of a crow. That’s when I realized that the crowd wasn’t gathering around me, and the ambulance hadn’t been called for my sake.

Somebody really had been shot.
